Philip Seymour Hoffman (1967 -- 2014)
Born 23rd July 1967 in Fairpoint, New York, Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of four children. Born to Marilyn O’Connor and Gordon Stowell Hoffman, he started acting age 15 in high school and went on to the New York State Summer School of the Arts and New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, achieving a BFA degree.
After completing his degree, one of Hoffman’s first role was in the long running TV police drama Law & Order (1991). A year later, he played a prep school student in Scent of A Woman (1992) with Al Pacino and Chris O’Donnell. Notable supporting actor roles followed in Boogie Nights (1997) with Mark Wahlberg, The Big Lebowski (1998) with Jeff Bridges, Flawless (1999) with Robert De Niro, The Talented Mr Ripley (1999) with Matt Damon, Almost Famous (2000) with Billy Crudup and Along Came Polly (2004) with Ben Stiller. In 2005, Hoffman landed the lead role in Capote. The film focused on American author Truman Capote’s research into the brutal killings of a Kansas family while they slept. Hoffman’s intense portrayal of Capote won the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in 2006. His performance also won the Golden Globe, the BAFTA and the Screen Actors Guild Award for lead actor. Hoffman went on to appear in Mission Impossible lll (2006), Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), Doubt (2008), Synedoche, New York (2008), The Boat That Rocked (2009), The Ides Of March (2011), Moneyball ((2012), A Late Quarter (2012) and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), each time working alongside strong leads to include Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Bill Nighy, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Christopher Walken. In 2010, he made his directorial debut in the acclaimed Jack Goes Boating.
Hoffman also had a love of theatre and his talent was recognised with 3 Tony nominations for his stage work.
At the time of his death, Seymour Hoffman had completed work on A Most Wanted Man and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part l for release in 2014. He had also just completed filming The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part ll.
